Op zoek naar de Ladder van Lansink bij de grote expositie ‘Bricks of Wonder’ van de Belgische kunstenaar Dirk Denoyelle in de Westfield Mall of the Netherlands in Leidschendam
Een merkwaardig bericht van een ‘verre’ Facebook-vriend zette mij op het spoor van ‘Bricks of Wonder’: een verassende Lego-expositie in Leidschendam, waar de Belgische kunstenaar Dirk Denoyelle zijn uit meer dan twee miljoen Lego-stenen opgebouwde creaties ten toon heeft gesteld. Rudy van Haren had aan zijn summiere bericht drie foto’s toegevoegd: een afbeelding met de titel van de expositie, een foto met een korte Nederlandse en Engelse omschrijving van de Ladder van Lansink, en een afbeelding van een Lego-bouwsel, dat de voorkeursvolgorde van het afvalbeheer voorstelt, inclusief de kleuren van rood naar groen. De tijdelijke expositie van Dirk Denoyelle’s ‘Bricks of Wonder’ bleek gehuisvest in de fraaie, moderne Wesfield Mall of the Netherlands, een complex, dat mij aan Kuala Lumpur deed denken. De immense (gratis) parkeergarage had ons al verwonderd, maar het winkelcentrum verraste ons nog meer. De grootste verrassing was échter de Lego-expositie, ondergebracht naast het pand van de ANWB. De gastvrouw, die de toegangskaarten controleerde, vroeg of wij zelf Lego-fans waren. Waarschijnlijk riep onze grijze haardos die vraag op. Wij antwoordden dat wij geïnteresseerd waren in het werk van de Belgische lego-kunstenaar. Ik voegde daaraan toe, benieuwd te zijn naar de verbeelding van de Ladder van Lansink, waarop Frans Vissers zei: ‘Dat is mijnheer Lansink’.
De verbaasde receptioniste meldde, dat de ladder aan het einde van de expositie stond. Via een vaste route zouden we eerst de andere creaties van Dirk Denoyelle bewonderen, van dichtbij en veraf om van de Lego-kunstwerken te kunnen genieten. De creaties maakten meteen een overrompelende indruk, of het nu grote of kleine, twee- of driedimensionale, zwart-witte of kleurrijke voorstellingen betrof. Klaarblijkelijk had de receptioniste hem verteld, dat de uitvinder van de ladder de expositie aan het bekijken was. Intussen was duidelijk, dat zijn ladder-creatie van deel uitmaakte van de thema-expositie over duurzaamheid, een verdieping lager. Aangekomen bij de ladder verbond het staflid mij door met de kunstenaar, die zei zeer vereerd te zijn met mijn bezoek. Ik verzekerde Dirk, dat die eer wederzijds was. Het is immers een eer via de Ladder van Lansink deel uit te maken van zijn bijzondere expositie. Die woorden mocht ik toelichten in een interview.
Dirk Denoyelle vertelde mij, dat zijn dochter Yanaika hem had aangeraden een creatie te wijden aan de ladder. Yanaika had hem ook meegeholpen met de opbouw en inrichting van het themagedeelte over duurzaamheid. Een ‘tegenprestatie’ lag voor de hand. Spontaan besloot ik mijn waardering te onderstrepen met de toezending van mijn ‘ladderboeken’, achtereenvolgens ‘De Kracht van de Kringloop’ en het Engelstalige boek ‘Challenging Changes’ over de relatie tussen de Ladder van Lansink en circulaire economie. Het onverwachte telefoongesprek bood mij ook de gelegenheid om enkele kanttekeningen te maken bij de betekenis van de figuren, die Dirk Denoyelle – wellicht op advies van zijn dochter – op de treden van de lego-ladder heeft geplaatst. Vier vuilniswagens, dat leek mij te veel van het goede (of slechte?). Ik haast me op te merken, dat de vrijheid van de kunstenaar hem uiteraard de ruimte geeft om – waar dat om artistieke redenen nodig is – de voorkeursvolgorde een eigen invulling te geven.
Bij het vertrek kreeg ik van de medewerkers van de expositie als aandenken Dirk’s boek ‘Briljant Bricks, waarin hij ‘alles (vertelt) over de wondere wereld van de blokjes met noppen’. Het fraaie, rijk geïllustreerde boek is een ware inspiratiebron voor jonge, oude en nieuwe lego-fans. Na thuiskomst trof ik in mijn mailbox al een bericht van Dirk Denoyelle in mijn mailbox. Ik had om toezending van zijn adres gevraagd voor de toezending van mijn boeken. Later bedacht ik, dat ik een bezoek aan Antwerpen kon combineren met de overhandiging van mijn boeken: in meervoud, omdat beide dochters waardering verdienen voor hun publicaties over duurzaamheid: Laura over ‘Tiny Homes’ en Yanaika over ‘De Klimaatschok’. De familie Denoyelle timmert dus flink aan de weg: ‘timmerwerk’ dat brede belangstelling verdient.
Binnenkort ontmoet ik Dirk, Laura en Yanaika Denoyelle: een gevolg van wat toevalligheden heten: het bericht van Rudy van Haren, het noemen van mijn naam door Frans Vissers en de oplettendheid van de receptioniste van de expositie. Maar kunstenaar Han Klinkhamer leerde mij ooit: toeval bestaat niet, genade wel: een stelling die mij aanspreekt. Ik houd het dus op genade, in de zin van goddelijke welwillendheid.
